Overview of PPS:
Polyphenylene sulfide, with its full name being Poly(p-phenylene sulfide), is abbreviated as PPS in English. The molecular structure of PPS is relatively simple. The main molecular chain is composed of benzene rings and sulfur atoms arranged alternately. A large number of benzene rings endow PPS with rigidity, while a large number of thioether bonds provide flexibility. It has such advantages as being hard and brittle, having a high degree of crystallinity, being flame retardant, having good thermal stability, relatively high mechanical strength, and excellent electrical properties.
Characteristics of PPS:
Excellent Heat Resistance: The heat distortion temperature is generally higher than 260°C. It can be used for a long period in the temperature range of 180 - 220°C and can withstand 260°C in the short term.
Outstanding Chemical Corrosion Resistance: It has high chemical stability, approaching that of polytetrafluoroethylene. It is stable to most acids, esters, copper, phenols, aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, etc. However, it is not resistant to chlorinated biphenyls, oxidizing acids, oxidants, concentrated sulfuric acid, concentrated nitric acid, aqua regia, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, etc.
Good Electrical Properties: Both the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor (tangent of the dielectric loss angle) are relatively low, and they do not change much within a wide range of frequencies, temperatures, and humidities. It has good arc resistance.
Good Flame Retardancy: The oxygen index is as high as over 44%. It can burn in the flame but will not drip, and it will self-extinguish when removed from the fire. The smoke emission rate is lower than that of halogenated polymers.
Excellent Dimensional Stability: The molding shrinkage rate is low, the linear expansion coefficient is small, and the water absorption rate is extremely low. There is minimal dimensional change when it is exposed to water or organic substances for a long time.
Excellent Mechanical Properties: It has high rigidity, which is rare among engineering materials. It has relatively high tensile strength and flexural modulus, good creep resistance under load, high hardness, and good wear resistance.
Good Adhesion to Metals and Non-metals: When used to bond glass, its bonding strength is higher than the cohesion of the glass.
Applications of PPS:
Electrical and Electronic Field: It can be used to manufacture high-voltage components, housings, sockets, terminals on televisions and computers, starting coils, blades of electric motors, brush holders and rotor insulation parts, contact switches, relays, electric irons, hair dryers, lamp holders, space heaters, F-class films, various connectors, coil tubes, solid-state relays, magnetic sensor heads, wiring connectors, sockets, coil bobbins, trimmer capacitors, fuse bases, etc.
Automotive Industry: It is suitable for manufacturing exhaust gas recirculation valves, water pump impellers, carburetors, exhaust devices, exhaust regulating valves, light reflectors, bearings, sensing components, automotive electronic connectors, various components under the hood, steering wheel solenoid valves, automotive air conditioning pump components, automotive air conditioning refrigerant piping fixtures, ignition coil components, etc.
Mechanical Industry: It is used as bearings, pumps, valves, pistons, precision gears, as well as parts of photocopiers, cameras, computers, conduits, sprayers, fuel injectors, instrument and meter parts, etc.
Chemical Industry: It can be used to manufacture acid- and alkali-resistant valve pipelines, pipe fittings, valves, gaskets and corrosion-resistant components such as submersible pumps or impellers, and linings for chemical equipment.
Environmental Protection Field: PPS fiber filter materials can be applied to high-temperature and harsh working conditions in industries such as smelting, chemical engineering, building materials, thermal power generation, garbage incinerators, and coal-fired boilers. It is a high-quality and efficient high-temperature resistant filter material.
Military and National Defense Field: It can be used to manufacture many components such as the vertical tail fins of fighter jets and missiles, missile combustion chambers, aerospace aircraft connectors, coil bobbin gaskets, as well as corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant components of guns, helmets, military tents, containers, astronaut supplies, warships and submarines.
Tableware Field: It can be used to manufacture tableware such as chopsticks, spoons, bowls and plates.
