PMMA vs Polycarbonate for Signage, Lighting and Glazing in High-UV Climates: A Buyer's Guide for Southeast Asia and the Middle East
A climate-first decision for sign fabricators and lighting buyers

In high-UV, high-temperature markets, the transparent sheet or resin you choose decides whether a sign face still looks new after three monsoons or two desert summers. We export UV-grade PMMA across Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and the buying logic is consistent: let the climate, not the catalogue, drive the choice.
Optics: where PMMA pulls ahead
Acrylic transmits up to 92% of light with minimal haze and glows evenly at the edges, which is why lightbox and channel-letter faces stay with PMMA when brilliance matters. Polycarbonate transmits around 88% and carries a faint blue-grey tint unless optical grades are specified.
Weathering and impact: a balanced trade
PMMA is inherently UV-stable: gloss and colour hold for years with no protective coating, and its hard surface resists scratching during cleaning. PC wins decisively on impact - it tolerates typhoon debris, vandalism and transport abuse - but economy grades yellow under equatorial sun unless UV-stabilised or coated.

Practical guidance by application
Lightbox faces, decorative glazing and sun-exposed sign faces: UV-grade PMMA. Vandal-prone transit shelters, protective screens and machine guards: UV-stabilised PC. Mixed-duty storefronts often combine both - a PMMA face with PC backing where impact is expected. We ship UV-grade PMMA with RoHS and REACH documentation and support fabricators with processing guidance.
Table 1. Climate-driven decision table
Criterion | PMMA | Polycarbonate |
Light transmission | Up to 92% | About 88% |
UV ageing | Excellent, no yellowing | Grade-dependent, needs UV package |
Impact resistance | Moderate | Very high |
Fabrication | Polishes, bonds, laser-cuts cleanly | Machines, cold-bends, drills without cracking |
Relative cost | Medium | Medium-high |
