Choosing the Right Thermoplastic Elastomer: A Practical Guide to TPE, TPV, TPEE and TPU
Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) combine the flexibility of rubber with the processability of plastics. They can be injection molded, extruded and blow molded without vulcanization, and scrap can be recycled. For buyers in automotive, cable, consumer and industrial markets, the question is not whether to use a TPE, but which one. This guide summarizes the four main families exported by DOWREN and how to choose between them.

Seven Criteria for Material Selection
When comparing grades, evaluate seven criteria before ordering:
(1) hardness (Shore A 0–100 for styrenic grades, up to Shore D 72 for TPEE);
(2) tensile strength and elongation at break;
(3) service temperature — SBS-based grades below 80 °C, SEBS up to 120 °C, TPV 135 °C, TPEE up to 150 °C;
(4) weathering resistance, confirmed by QUV testing;
(5) processing window and overmolding adhesion to PP, ABS or PA;
(6) regulatory compliance — FDA, RoHS and REACH documentation is essential for export; (7) total cost and supply stability.
High-Temperature Applications
Parts close to engines or in under-hood environments require special attention. Our TPEE grades (Shore D 25–72, −40 °C to +150 °C) are engineered for CVJ boots, bellows and couplings, while TPV compounds with heat resistance up to 135 °C replace EPDM rubber in seals, weatherstripping and dust covers, cutting both part weight and processing cost.
When Elastomers Are Not Enough
For metal replacement at higher temperatures, our PPS compounds offer long-term performance at 220–240 °C with UL94 V-0 flame retardance and excellent chemical resistance — a cost-effective alternative to PEEK in pump impellers, valves and thermal-management parts. For severe chemical service, our fluoropolymer range (PTFE, PFA, FEP, PVDF, ETFE) covers lined pipes, valves, pumps and gaskets, with PTFE and PFA rated for continuous use up to 260 °C.
