In aggressive chemical service, choose by temperature and cost: PVDF for mild acids and alkalis below 150 °C, FEP or ETFE for 150–200 °C duty, PTFE for the ultimate barrier, and PFA when you need PTFE-grade chemistry in melt-processed precision parts. The trade-offs are explained below.

Why Fluoropolymers Matter

In chemical plants, metal equipment fails fastest at flanges, valves, pump internals and pipe joints. Fluoropolymers are the only material family that combines inertness across almost the full pH range with very low permeability. They serve as tank linings, lined pipes, valves, pumps, gaskets and seals in chlor-alkali, acid, pharmaceutical and water-treatment facilities. Because they cannot corrode, equipment life extends and downtime falls.

How to Choose

Define the service conditions. Record temperature, chemical concentration and pressure at the contact point. Temperature is the first filter: every material above has a hard ceiling.
Match the temperature ceiling. Above 200 °C, only PTFE and PFA qualify. Between 150 and 200 °C, FEP is the cost-effective melt-processable option. Below 150 °C, ETFE and PVDF cover most duties with better mechanical strength.
Consider the mechanical duty. For parts that take impact or vibration — impellers, valve bodies — PVDF and ETFE win. For static barriers — linings, gaskets — PTFE and PFA are preferred.
Compare cost and payback. PVDF pays back fastest in mild service; PTFE and PFA pay back where chemicals would quickly destroy metal. Buy the highest temperature class the application demands, not the most expensive one.
